About
Mike O’Grady

Mike O’Grady is a dad and a husband living with secondary progressive Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues. In the case of MS, this immune system malfunction destroys myelitis (the fatty substance that coats and protects nerve fibers in the brain and spinal chord).

At age 40, Mike started to have issues with extreme fatigue, the ability to concentrate and much pain throughout his body. After a trip to his doctor resulted in being told he was burning the candle at both ends and needed to reduce stress in his life, Mike gave it a try. After several years of new diets, exercise and misdiagnosis of Lyme disease, Mike’s issues only worsened.

Mike had established his career in the in-home services industry for years as an expert in sales. This career is what drove him to provide for his family and it was all crumbling beneath him. With a great deal of persistence,

Mike finally found helpful doctors who accurately diagnosed him with Multiple Sclerosis in the Fall of 2012. It took several years of struggle down a frustrating path of disability for Mike to come to grips with his “new normal” as he calls it.

Life is certainly different, but Mike says, “that’s okay”. He used to have big goals that involved selling millions of dollars a year in business. Now, making his kids breakfast and a successful trip to the grocery store is one of his accomplishments for the day, and that’s okay.

Mike has learned to take lessons from his sales and management days and use them for his new normal of living with Multiple Sclerosis. Mike’s hope is that these coping strategies and new approach to life with MS will inspire others with the disease.

There is life with MS, you just have to adjust, stay positive and create a new life around the disease.
